The Mission and Objectives of the American Basketball English Camp

The American Basketball English Camp is a collaboration of the coaches, teachers, volunteers, organizers, schools, parents' associations, sponsors and partners working together to create a unique experience for children.

As an experienced organizer of cultural exchange events and as an educator in Taiwan, founder Tony Coolidge found great potential among Taiwanese children to master the English language, as well as many educational resources. However, he discovered that the education system was missing something that would help children to improve their English language skills. Most children were missing the elements of purpose, meaningful objectives and fun, which are the motivating factors in the natural, active learning process. By the time children reached Junior High, they had either found their interest in English, or they had already given up on English as being "too difficult" or "too boring." Mr. Coolidge created an activity that he believed would help overcome years of being "turned off" by rote English memorization and testing.

Objective

Taiwanese parents increasingly looks beyond Taiwan's island shores for cultural experiences to expand the horizons of their children. Authentic international experiences are often expensive and hard to find, especially for many rural communities. The goal of the organizers is to make its services available to more students who don't normally have exposure to international culture.

Mission

The purpose of the American Basketball English Camp is to provide a unique experience that engages the students of Taiwan with an active English learning experience that is fun and healthy as well as creative and competitive. Beginning the students a new hands-on experience, they will develop a new relationship to English learning and gain courage to pursue further English language training. The unique basketball training will also offer students an American-style competitive environment that will inspire future basketball training.
